The n8n alternative with an AI builder and importer
An n8n alternative that builds the workflow from a description and verifies each step on real data. Import your n8n JSON and let the AI finish it.
n8n is a strong product, and most people searching for an n8n alternative are not unhappy with it. They are tired of the part that is theirs to do: pick the nodes, wire them, write the expressions that map one node's JSON into the next, run, read, fix, run again. Self-hosters also carry upgrades and uptime, and on n8n cloud the person who built the workflows is often the only one who can change them.
MadMax moves that work to the AI: describe the outcome, it plans and builds the graph on a familiar canvas, then verifies every step against real data before you go live. Your n8n exports import directly.
Where MadMax is different
Who does the building. In n8n, you build. In MadMax, you describe and Max builds: a plan, a graph, and the data references between steps. A linter flags shape mismatches before runtime, the class of bug you usually find in n8n by reading a red node's output. The canvas stays yours to edit. See build mode.
Verification on real data is part of the build. The verification run executes read-safe steps on realistic inputs, judges the output semantically (an empty object from an AI step fails), captures a real payload for webhook triggers, and previews outbound sends without sending. Editing a verified step revokes its proof, so a green check means something.
Approvals are one node. The approval step pauses the run until a person decides, in Slack, by a signed email link, by replying YES or NO to a text, or on the run page. The decision routes down the approved or rejected port.
Branching and loops without expression debugging. If, switch, loop, loop until, and merge are nodes; a loop's done port fires with the collected results.
One AI step with the hard parts included. The AI agent extracts, classifies, summarizes, or runs a custom prompt with structured output. It takes tools (web, browser, code, connected apps), a knowledge base for retrieval, and an AI memory with sessions and recall. No sub-node assembly.
Email and text triggers are built in. Each workflow can mint an inbound email address; a verified phone can start a run by text.
Runs are inspectable, and kept. Every run shows each step's input, output, timing, and attempts; failed steps carry "Repair with AI."
MCP and REST. The MCP server exposes the in-canvas assistant's tools, so Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Claude Code can build, verify, and debug workflows (activation stays human-only). The REST API accepts an n8n export on POST /api/v1/workflows.
Pricing shape. Free: a personal workspace, 3 active workflows, 500 runs a month, 100 AI credits to start. Pro: $29 per month per workspace, unlimited workflows, 2,000 runs a month, 10 parallel runs, 5 seats, 1,000 AI credits monthly, MCP and API included.
Where n8n is still the better choice
- Self-hosting. n8n is source-available and runs on your own infrastructure. MadMax is a managed cloud service; only enterprise customers get a dedicated isolated instance.
- Node library and community nodes. n8n's catalog is very large and the community adds more. MadMax ships native integrations for the apps teams use most (Slack, Gmail, GitHub, Notion, Stripe, Postgres and more) plus HTTP and webhooks, which covers APIs but not every niche app.
- Building by hand as the point. If you enjoy node graphs and don't want an AI in the loop, n8n's editor is excellent.
- Deep custom code. MadMax's code step is a sandboxed JavaScript transform with no network access, by design. If your workflows lean on code nodes that reach out, n8n gives you more room.

Moving from n8n
MadMax imports n8n exports directly, and the translation never fails outright.
- Export the workflow JSON from n8n.
- On the workflows index, open New workflow and drop the file in (up to 20 MB). The importer recognizes n8n format.
- Nodes with a MadMax equivalent map directly: HTTP request, if and switch (cases become ports), loops (batches become iterate and done), set, code, and the trigger types.
- Nodes without an equivalent arrive as labeled placeholder steps that pass data through unchanged, so the workflow's shape survives. The import report lists each one.
- Ask Max to finish the build. The placeholders seed a ready-made prompt, and Max replaces them with real steps.
- Re-bind connections (secrets never travel in an export), verify, activate.
What to check: sticky notes and n8n-specific AI sub-nodes are dropped (noted in the report), and expressions that reached deep into n8n's item structure deserve a re-verify against a real sample.
Frequently asked
Is there a free n8n alternative? MadMax's free plan has a personal workspace, 3 active workflows, 500 runs a month, and the full integration library.
Can I self-host MadMax? No. It is a managed service; enterprise customers get a dedicated, tenant-isolated deployment on their own database and infrastructure.
Does it work with Slack and Gmail? Yes, both are native OAuth connections, and Slack can also trigger workflows and receive approval buttons.
What happens when a step fails? By default the run fails and the run page shows the step, its input, and the error. Per step you can choose retry (up to 5 attempts with backoff), continue out an error port, or retry then continue. See error handling.
Can I bring my own OpenAI or Anthropic key? Yes, for AI steps inside workflows. Connect Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, or OpenRouter in Settings and bind it on the step; usage bills to your key. The builder chat runs on the platform model.
