MadMax has a built-in text step for messaging your own team, but when a workflow needs to text a customer from your number, that is Twilio. The Twilio integration sends SMS and WhatsApp messages from a Twilio number you own, to any phone, with a body templated from the steps before it: an order status, a verification code, a reminder an AI agent wrote. Anything that texts customers in bulk can wait for a manager's approval first, and each run records the body, the recipient and the message SID per step, so "did we text them, and what did it say" is a lookup in the run history. Describe it in plain English and MadMax builds the workflow, binds your Twilio account and previews the exact message during the build, so the first real text goes out after you activate, not before.
What teams build
- A webhook from fulfillment hits a switch on status: shipped runs
send_smswith the tracking link, delayed has an AI agent write an apology with the new date, and a store lookup skips customers already texted today. - A 5 pm schedule lists tomorrow's appointments from Supabase, a loop sends a WhatsApp reminder to each with
send_whatsapp, and the loop's done port posts any failures to Slack so the front desk can call them. - A form collects a campaign message and a segment, an agent rewrites it to fit one SMS segment and flags anything that reads as spam, and an approval shows the final text and recipient count before a loop sends it.
How it connects
Paste your Account SID (starts with AC) and auth token from the Twilio Console. MadMax uses them as HTTP Basic credentials the way Twilio's API expects, stores both encrypted and never renders the token back; rotating the token is a reconnect on the same connection. Sends go from your Twilio number or a Messaging Service SID to a number in E.164 format, and WhatsApp sends get the whatsapp: prefix added for you. Inbound texts are not part of this integration; MadMax's own text trigger handles those on the platform number. See managing connections.
