OpenAI in MadMax is not an app you automate; it is a model provider you can plug into the AI steps of any workflow. Connect your key once, pick it as the Provider on an AI agent step, and that step runs on GPT, billed to your OpenAI account instead of MadMax credits. Everything around it stays the same: the step still gets the same tools, memory and knowledge-base retrieval, its output can still wait on an approval step for a person to check, and every run records the prompt, the answer and the token usage. What teams build
- An email trigger receives an invoice PDF, an extract step on your OpenAI key pulls vendor, total, due date and line items, and totals over a threshold pause for an approval before the row is saved to a store.
- A webhook from the helpdesk hits a GPT classifier that sorts tickets into billing, bug, how-to or spam; a switch routes billing to a human approval, bugs to Linear issues, and how-to questions to an answer drafted from a knowledge base.
- A Monday schedule fetches last week's numbers with a web request, a custom-prompt agent on GPT writes the digest to a fixed schema (wins, risks, numbers), and send email delivers it to the team.
How it connects
Paste an API key (sk-…) from the OpenAI dashboard, and add an Organization ID or Project ID if your billing needs the charges routed. The key routes agent steps bound to this connection through OpenAI on your own account, and MadMax does not meter that spend; the canvas chat and embeddings stay on the platform model. Steps without a provider bound run the MadMax default, and a workspace can hold several keys (production and test, say) with each step picking one.
